HIVE: Heritage Languages, Initiatives, Voices, and Engagement

HIVE (Heritage Languages, Initiatives, Voices, and Engagement) is an inclusive Special Interest Group (SIG) dedicated to supporting heritage language learners. It serves as a collaborative space for faculty and graduate students to exchange ideas, share effective teaching practices, and develop new approaches for working with diverse language learners, including those in mixed L2 and heritage classes.

WHO SUPPORTS HIVE?

HIVE is supported by the Council on Language Instruction (CLI) and the Language Resource Center (LRC).

WHAT DOES HIVE DO?

Shares best practices for teaching, assessment, placement, and course design for heritage learners
Explores classroom strategies for both L2 and heritage students
Supports research-based approaches in heritage language education
Strengthens student engagement and amplifies heritage learners’ voices

WHO CAN JOIN?

All faculty who teach languages in any department
Graduate students involved in language teaching, pedagogy, education, or applied linguistics
CLI membership is not required—everyone is welcome

Quarterly meetings, with optional subgroups based on interest
A collaborative environment focused on open discussion
Opportunities to collaborate across programs and languages
